When I first found out AG had a milk protein allergy I had no idea what I could eat. I started going through the pantry and realized almost EVERYTHING in it contained dairy. I was instantly frustrated. I may have told hubs I was never going to eat again because I couldn’t eat anything. Dramatic much? Giving up breastfeeding wasn’t an option for me. So I had to find things that would satisfy my cravings that didn’t have dairy in them. Dinners were easy. I am able to find a wide variety of recipes that are dairy free or I adapt recipes to make them dairy free. Snacks on the other hand weren’t as easy. It took a while to find snacks that I enjoyed. Now, a few months later I have go to meals (which I post on Simply Made with Love), snacks and am eating healthier than ever before.
Here are some of my favorite snacks.
Honey Graham crackers are my favorite. I love them with peanut butter on top or by themselves. This satisfies my sweet tooth most times.
My favorite on the go snack is the Larabar. They are gluten free and most are diary free. My favorite kinds are chocolate chip cookie dough, coconut creme and peanut butter chocolate chip. I have one of these in my diaper bag at all times.
To satisfy my salty cravings, I will have tortilla chips. I pair it will corn salsa, guacamole or peach and mango salsa.
When I was pregnant (and sick all the time) I fell in love with veggie straws and chips. They are delicious and just as good as chips in my opinion.
My friend, Brittany introduced me to Boom Chicka Pop. I buy mine at Target. There are only 35 calories for a cup. And…they have a sweet (kettle corn) kind that is only 37 calories for a cup.
I also love cucumber and hummus tarts and apples with peanut butter and dairy free chocolate chips.
What are some of your favorite snacks? Any of them dairy free?
I can't imagine what I would do if Emma had a dairy allergy.
Glad you were able to find things.
This is awesome! So far, we don't seem to have any sensitivities but I am about 80% dairy free. These are great snack ideas and I'll be checking Simply Made for more meal ideas! Thanks!
I don't love milk and cheese anyway so your snacks look great to me! I actually eat most of them already. I tried that popcorn at costco and can't stop eating it. It's so good! You also should try almond milk. It really doesn't taste bad and is a good alternative in cereals and shakes.
I just found out my 5 month old may have a milk protein allergy. I do not want to stop nursing at all. How did you discover her allergy and did it clear up?
Thank you for posting! I started going dairy free in if December because my son is sensitive to it. I've now eliminated dairy, peanuts and soy. He's is a much happier little guy. I'm finding that unless I've made it it likely has dairy. One of my favorite savory snacks is ritz chips abd carrit sticks with hummus. I'm finding I can adapt lots of dessert/snack recipes thanks to food allergy pioneers!
Im very lactose intolerant and despite what the label says, i can devour a box of the original cheezits. Im pretty sure it is not real cheese. Also I can eat cheezwhiz from a can.
Hi Leah~ My son has milk, wheat and peanut allergies, ugh! This is all fairly new to me and it still takes me hours reading labels at the grocery store, so every little tip helps. Are the graham crackers gluten free? And my son is also a big fan of the Larabars since he does a lot of cycling.
Thanks so much for all of the info!
You’re very welcome! I’m not sure about graham crackers being gluten free. I’m sure they make some that are though! Larabars are my go to snack!
My son is 6 months and exclusively breastfed. He is severely allergic to dairy. It has been an adjustment but we have survived. Some of my favorite snacks include:
Fruit (fresh, blended, or dried)
Chocolate covered almonds
Wheat thins with sunbutter
Popcorn
Graham crackers
Nutter butters
Potato chips
Fruit roll up
Thank you! Such great information, way to go mama for sticking it out nursing!
