In my early teaching days, I used to be part of an after school enrichment group called book cooks. Once a week, the kids would stay after to listen to a book read aloud and make a fun food item to go with the book. It was something the kids loved.
Fast forward many, many years and now I have one child who is BEGGING for her own YouTube channel. That won’t happen but I did tell her she could start doing some blog stuff with me if she wanted. She said yes, and this blog is being brought back to life. Together she and I will be doing monthly BOOK COOK posts. She picks the book, used Pinterest to plan the craft and also a food activity to go with. I’m excited to do this with her and can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
First up is a Thanksgiving book, The Very Stuffed Turkey.

After they read the book, we started with the craft. She picked a cute turkey handprint craft. All you need is acrylic paint and paper. We painted her hands like a turkey and pressed it on the cardstock.

After the turkey was finished, we made a food activity. Oreo turkeys was what she choose. Bring on all the sugar! Thankfully we had some leftover candy corn in order to make this happen.

Basically, you need oreos, candy corn, candy eyes and icing. Open the Oreo up, on part of the top of one of the sides of the Oreo, put some icing. Enough that you’d be able to press candy corn into it and they won’t move. Then put more icing on top of the candy corn and put the other half of the Oreo back on. After that, add a little icing to the top of the Oreo for the eyes and nose. Then add each item and press firmly in. There you have it! A cute and edible turkey that the littles will have fun eating!
