“Donut” you know….
I love giving little gifts or treats to friends and family. Most of the time, it’s something I’ve baked or created. Something little, that doesn’t take too long to put together but enough to let someone know that you’re thinking of them. During quarantine last year, we made these rice krispie donuts. They were so much fun for the kids to make and decorate. Once they were done, we decided to deliver to some friends we hadn’t seen in a while. We met outside of course, and made sure to keep your distance. Before we delivered, I made some printable donut tags to go with.

These tags can be used for so many things. We’ve made baked donuts with cake mix, you can buy a box of donuts from the store and tape the tag onto the box or make donut shaped cookies. You can also write your own saying on the tags, depending on the occasion.
There are not only so many options when it comes to what “donut” to make but also what saying you could put on the tags.

Now, onto the rice krispie treats. First, prepare rice krispie treats according to the recipe on the box.
6 cups of rice krispies, 3 tbs butter and 1 bag of marshmallows. Once marshmallows are melted and everything is mixed together, pour onto a lined baking sheet. I put a sheet of parchment paper on top of the rice krispies and use a rolling pin to roll it out to about 1 inch thick.
Once the krispies are rolled out, start cutting out the donuts. I didn’t have a donut cookie cutter when we first made these. So, I used a round cookie cutter and the top of my cooking spray. I’ve since ordered donut cookie cutters, and they’re so much easier to use. These are the ones I have.
After the donuts are cut out, it’s time for the frosting. Here you have a few options. You can take store bought icing from a container and melt it a TINY bit. Once melted, put in a plastic bag and cut the tip to “pipe” onto the donuts. Another option is making Royal Icing. I use the recipe below. The benefit to royal icing is that it will dry quick and completely which makes these easier to package and give.
Royal Icing:
4 cups confection sugar
2 tbs meringue powder
10 tbs warm water
*Combine ingredients in a mixer, Mix on high for 4 minutes. Add more water if needed to get desired consistency.
After they’re iced, it’s time for sprinkles. This is my kids favorite part. These would be fun to make for holidays and use festive sprinkles to go with.
How cute are these?!?
Such a fun spin on traditional rice krispie treats.
